The Stone Forest lies about 80 miles to the southeast of Kunming. A geological phenomenon, the Stone Forest was a vast expanse of sea during the Paleozoic era――some 270 million years ago. Later, the movement of tectonic plates altered the earth’s crust, causing the sea to recede and its limestone bottom to appear, thereby forming land.Due to the constant seeping ofrain through the cracks in the limestone, some of the stone formation dissolved and the fissures broadened, producing a group of great sculptures of different shapes, all molded by nature.

In the midst of the forest, there is a huge rock screen on which two words――Stone Forest――are engraved in official script (in a calligraphic style typical of the Han Dynasty, 206 B.C.-220 A.D.). Among the scenic sights is the "Sword Peak Pond" with jadeite-colored water so clear that one can see the bottom of the pond. Other astonishing sights include "Figure of Ashima," "Shi Ba Xiang Song" (its name originating in the Chinese love story, "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai"), and "Lotus Peak."

The splendor of the Stone Forest is enhanced by the local customs of the native Sani people (who are part of the Yi minority). Sani people are industrious and hospitable――and unconstrained. Sani women are expert at spinning, weaving, and embroidering. They like to wear rainbow-colored headgear and bright-colored dresses. The young people especially are very good singers and dancers. Every day at sunset, under the moonlight, boys and girls gather at the village platform. While the boys play the three-stringed plucked instruments, the girls clap their hands and dance the strong-rhythmed traditional "A’Xi (Ah-shi) Dance in the Moon" with great enthusiasm. If you happen to witness the event, you will be invited to join in the festivity.

Note that every lunar year, on June 24th, the Sani people celebrate their national festival――the Torch Festival. On that day, the entire Stone Forest is permeated with a celebratory atmosphere. There are traditional performances of wrestling and bull-fighting. Finally, when the land is enveloped in the curtain of night, the young men (holding torches in their hands) run after the young women to propose marriage in the light of colored lanterns.

Temple of Solitary Joy is located at inside west city gate of Ji County,Tianjin City. It is known for its refined architecture skill in Channel'sancient buildings and has got the reputation of Six Best. These are: Theearliest Dingshan Gate (Gate of Withstanding Hill) of the ground hall preservednow; The earliest Chiwei object on the Hill Gate preserved now; The earliestplane distribution which took pavilion as the center on the architecture plane; The biggest clay sculptured statue of Avalokiteavara inside a pavilion in China; The Avalokiteavara is also the most ancient high storeyed one; The more preciousfact is that the Temple of Solitary Joy has stood unscathed after thousand yearsof rain, snow, wind and frost and 28 big attacks, hence the most durable ancientMonastery of thousand years.

Entering the Temple , the first comes to sight is 10 m high gate, on thearch of which there hangs a horizontal inscribed board: Temple of Solitary Joy.The single eaves ground hall roof was the roof building form during the westernTsin (AD265-316) and Southern and Northern Dyansty (420-589) period, which wascalled Siadading in ancient time and now it is called big roof. On the two endsof the plane ridge, there are inward Chiweis. Chi denoted sparrow hawk inancient time, which is a kind of fierce bird. The stand base of the gate iscomparatively low, but the hall pinnacle is much higher above eaves and thepottery animal figures look sturdy; solemn and sturdy. There is no ceilinginside the pinnacle, therefor the painted beam and purlieus are visible. Thewhole piece is exquisitely wrought, simple arranged and skillfully done, forwhich people gasp in administration.

Crossing the gate, one comes to the core building - AvalokitesvaraPavilion, 23 m in height. Form outside appearance, it is two storeyed, butinside there is a hidden storey, thus three storeyed in fact. On the eavescorners, pottery unicorns are sculptured, on which little Buddha statues ride.Copper bells are hung under eaves corners, swaying with the wind, a speciallyrefined scene. The most attractive thing is the structure of Dougong (sets ofbrackets on top of the columns supporting the beams within and roof eaveswithout――each set consisting of tiers of outstretching arms called Gong, cushioned with trapezoidal blocks called Dou). It is made of overlapping Dougongshaped wood blocks and bow shaped horizontal wood bars by adopting 24 forms witheach layer stretching out as bracket, big in upper part and small in lower part, thinly scattered, steady and sturdy. It makes eaves of the pavilion look likeflying, far and deep in the sky, a beautiful and magnificent view.

The upperstorey of the pavilion is in a form of six corners empty well, while the lowerstorey is in a form of square empty well. On the four walls inside the pavilion, colorful murals are painted, thetheme of which is the images of 16 Arhats and 2 Ming Dynasty Emperors, which arethe earliest subjects of Buddhism. On he murals, 2 m high Arhats with 3 headsand 4 arms are extremely lifelike and Ming Emperors on the four walls are fullof power and grandeur. On the upper part of the murals, there are mountains, forest, cloud and river, while on the lower part, there are paintings of secularthemes with vivid and natural lines, which embody the superb the skill and artsof painting of ancient Buddhism in China.

Dr. Sun Yatsen’s Mausoleum

Among the historical and cultural attractions in Nanjing, the best known is Dr. Sun Yatsen’s Mausoleum.

Dr. Sun Yatsen’s Mausoleum sits on the southern slope of the Purple Mountain in the eastern suburbs of the city. Designed by a young architect Lu Yanzhi, the mausoleum took more than 3 years to build and cost 1.5 million silver dollars. The construction began on March 12, 1926 and completed in 1929 when Dr. Sun Yatsen was buried there on June 1.

Dr. Sun Yatsen, also named Sun Wen or Sun Zhongshan, is considered as the father of the Chinese democratic revolution. Born in a peasant family in Guangdong Province in 1866, he had his primary education in Honolulu, Hawaii sponsored by his elder brother from 1878 to 1883. He was so sad when he saw the poverty of the country upon his return. China had been a super power for centuries. But since the middle of Qing Dynasty in the 1800’s, China began to decline, which owed a great deal to the corruptions and incompetence of the Qing government. Foreign invasions and peasant rebellions made it even worse. The Opium War in 1840 ended with the “Treaty of Nanjing”. China was forced to pay an indemnity of 21 million silver dollars and cede Hong Kong to the Great Britain and open 5 free port cities to the westerners, which were Guangzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Ningbo and Shanghai. Following were the wars again launched by France in 1883 and Japan in 1894. The Chinese people lived in a miserable life. They were referred to the “sick man of the Orient” by the westerners. Dr. Sun Yatsen dreamed to save the nation by practicing medicine and that led him to Hong Kong to learn medicine when he was 21 years old. However, it did not work. The reality made him give up his medical career in his hometown and Macao but turn to politics in 1893.

From then on, he kept petitioning to the Qing government for reforms but was never responded. At great disappointment, he left the country later and went canvassing extensively in the United States of America, Europe and Japan, trying to win the sympathy and support from the overseas Chinese. With the funds raised, he organized “Revive China League” ― China’s first bourgeois organization. The following 1905 witnessed the founding of the “Chinese Revolutionary League” headed by Dr. Sun Yatsen, a party with a clear―cut program of “Expel Tartars, Restore China, Establish Republic & Equalize Land.” Dr. Sun Yatsen also put forth 3 democratic principles of “Nationalism, Democracy & People’s Livelihood” as his political goal. The armed movements against the Qing government took place continuously.
