这本书的主人公鲁滨逊在19岁时出海航行，很不幸他所乘的船遇到大风沉没了，船上的人都丧生了，只有他一人生还，漂流到了荒岛上。
他十分绝望，但心中的求生欲使他动手造了一艘小船，又把残船上所有的食物、工具、枪械搬到了岸上。后来他在一个山洞前搭起了帐篷，用木头打了一道墙，他还抓来了三只羊，几年后，羊就繁殖到了几十只。
一天他在岛上看到有一群野人正在吃人，便救了那个将要被吃掉的人，给他起名叫"星期五"。三年后，他俩发现海滩上有三个被捆住的人，一问才知道这三个人中，有一个人是一艘船的船长，他手下的人叛变了，把他和他的大副、旅客押到这里，此时有一部分叛变的人就在岛上，在一番激战后，大家夺回了船，鲁滨逊也回到了家。
