明朝嘉靖年间，倭寇---就是当时的日本海盗，屡屡侵犯东南沿海，烧杀掠夺，无恶不作。于是明朝皇帝恼火了，下令征调兵丁前往征剿，而且限期必须到达指定海防前线。当时湘西
这边是什么情况呢?湘西这边属于土司制度，土司制度是封建社会时期在少数民族地区通过分封地方首领世袭管职以统治当地人民的一种特殊政治制度。在湘西的土司制度始于五代十国时期的溪州之战，止于清朝末期，在湘西流传了八百多年。土司王有自己的王宫朝庭文武百官军队，甚至还能私造地方钱币，对当地人民也有生杀予夺的权力，自治程度非常之高，是名副其实的“国中之国”。在张家界城区边上就有一座专门展示土家族历史文化的土家风情园，当地老百姓也称其为土司城，就是按照以前的土司王城模样修复起来的，里面有世界上最大的吊脚楼群。土司王虽然自治程度很高但他从名义上要服从于中央朝庭的统治，主要是通过两种方式来体现，一是纳贡，二是征丁。纳贡的物品都是地方物产，，如布匹茶叶岩耳药材朱砂等种类繁多。在明朝正德年间，湘西彭氏土司王就曾向朝庭进贡楠木而受到赏赐。至今湘西进贡的大楠木还支撑着北京城里的那些宫殿。征丁就是一旦有战事发生，土司王有责任和义务向朝庭输送兵丁。湘西离北京城有几千里地，以前通讯手段可没有现在这么发达，可以一个电话就通知到，在古代得通过驿站快马加鞭一站接一站把皇帝老子的圣旨传过来，赶过来的时候刚好在过年的前一天，皇命不可违，战事又紧急，可又新年在即，没有办法，老人们决定把准备过年的萝卜豆腐腊肉一锅煮了，提前一天过赶年，由此还产生了当地的一种特色火锅――三下锅。这种习俗也就这么一直保留了下来，至今，无论是山村还是市区只要是土家族人，他们都是提前一天的晚上过年。时至今日，湘西还流传着这样的诗句“八月里是中秋，堂前点兵下苏州。右手举起刀一把，左手提起倭人头。”在土家风情园内，也有明朝皇帝题写匾额“东南第一功”。
这就是土家人第一个节日赶年的来历。
