桐乡市杭白菊种植面积、量均居全国之首。进入桐乡，满地金黄，因此桐乡素有“百花地面”之美誉，并于1999年5月，被农业部授予“中国杭白菊之乡”的荣誉称号。
名称由来
杭白菊原产桐乡，为可冠以“杭”称呼呢？这里有这么一个典故：民国初年，安徽茶商汪裕泰向南洋转销桐乡白菊花，在桐乡由菊商朱金伦加工、包装、并且按照汪裕泰的要示贴上商标和产品说明。南洋方则是商人梁老板。汪裕泰是个聪明人，为了防止梁老板甩掉他这个中间商，就吩咐朱金伦在白菊花封包上都打上“杭州西湖金伦茶庄出品”的样，后来梁老板果使出“过河拆桥”的伎俩，结果，他当然找不到子虚乌有的金伦茶庄，但桐乡的白菊花从此就有了“杭白菊”的美名。
传说典故
关于杭白菊的来历，在当地民间还流传着这么一个传说：很久以前，在杭嘉湖平原一带，有一户姓白的人家。家中只有一位60多岁的老太太和小孙女白菊，祖孙俩相依为命，日子过得非常艰苦，由于老太太中年丧夫，儿子媳妇又在小白菊三岁的那年相继病故，一连串的打击使老人过早衰老，60多岁的人看上去像80岁，头发全白，眼睛也看不清东西。生活的得担全落到了年小的白菊身上，不到10岁的白菊每天既要照顾生病的奶退席，又要管好三分自家地里的蔬菜。尽管日子过得很艰苦，小非常孝顺，千方百计地给老人请医求药，但奶奶的病非但没有好转，并且越来越严重，不但眼睛全瞎了，甚至连床也下不了，白菊非常伤心。
有一天夜里，小白菊在迷迷糊糊的睡梦中，似乎看到一位老爷爷来到她的床边，手里拿着一朵小花，告诉她一个治眼睛的秘方。用小白花敷眼睛可以复明。白菊高兴的从老人手中接过来。但醒来却发现原来是在做梦，但她不放弃到处去寻找这种小白花，终于被她找到了，回来以后就把它嚼啐了给奶奶贴在睛上，一连十多天，过去了，奶奶的`眼睛恢复了。从那以后，家家户户的地里都种上了这种小花，浙浙地人们用来汽茶，也有人用来做药引子。为了纪念白菊，就把它叫做白菊花，又因为它适应在我们杭嘉湖一带种植，所以就给它取名叫杭白菊。
白菊花价值
白菊花具有一定的药用和医学价值。明代的李时珍和清代的赵学每都曾在医典里提到过。面现代医药药理实验也证明，白菊花煎剂具有搞炎降压、通气和脉、养血益神之疗效。若常用菊汤沐浴，能去痒、护肤、美容。新加坡国立在学研究组经研究发现，被用作中国传统中药的菊花有助于消除癌细胞，因为它含有一种各叫黄酮氧化剂。
而这个杭白菊啊，又分为三个等级。最好的是花骨朵，因为那个时候菊花还没有盛开，因此花粉的含量很高，营养成分基本上也没有流失，在我们这里叫做胎菊（蕾菊）；第二个等级就是半开的那种，那个时候的花蜜还没有全被采光，所含的营养成分也不算少的；最次的那种，当然是全开的，是在菊花差不多快凋谢的时候才被采摘的，所以已经没有很高的营养价值了，这种也就是我们最长见到的菊花茶，在全国各地的药店里都能看到的就是这种。所以桐乡这里卖的都是最好的胎菊，普通的外面到处都可以买的到的，而胎菊以前在国内销售的很少，全部出口了。为了让国内人了解和知道桐乡的胎菊，所以近二年来，桐乡市与浙江旅游局达成协议，让每一位来到桐乡的客人都能了解并品尝到菊花中的精品，所以在这里开设了这样一家品菊店。可以让我们的客人在劳累的旅途中品尝一杯菊花茶，帮您在清热去火养肝明目，而且女士还可以美容。不错吧！
