为了实现父亲的愿望，维克多・纳沃斯基买了飞往美国的机票。当他在纽约肯尼迪机场下机准备出机场时，却被拦了下来。原先他的祖国发生了政变，他的护照和身份证件全都失去了效用，被拒绝入境却又不能回国。无奈之下，他只能留在机场里生活。在那里，他遇到了形形色色的人，发现了他们的人生悲喜，最终遇见了空姐阿米莉・亚沃伦，邂逅了属于他的幸福，虽然后面没在一齐，但至少拥有过。

影片中很多地方出现了同一个词语：Waiting。是的，就是在这样封闭的环境里，形形色色的人们忙着自我五花八门的事情，然而他们也在做着同样一件事情――等待。等老局长卸任等了17年的海关局长弗兰克；从18岁到39岁，等着男人的一个承诺阿米莉亚；用尽各种方法试图接近暗恋已久的黑人女孩的汉克斯；用了40年，收集了57位爵士高手中的56个签名的维克多的父亲；逃匿在机场做清洁工23年的老吉普塔……
其实，幸福并没有它真正的定义，更没有终点。只要你想，只要你愿意，就能够无限的接近幸福。
